796,701. Pillars jammed between opposed surfaces. LEVINE & SON, Ltd. July 27, 1956 [Oct 24, 1955], No. 30334/55. Class 20(1) A display appliance comprises two or more telescopically associated members at least one of which is of tubular form and has therewithin resilient means applying axial pressure to a pressure element which engages the end of the other or another member so that the pillar may be sprung between two surfaces. As shown, the appliance 1 comprises three coaxial metal tubular members 4, 5, 6. A base plate 7 is welded to the lower end of member 6 which may have a rubber, felt baize, or like covering 8. A compression spring 9 arranged coaxially within member 6 engages at one end the foot 7 and at its other end the underside of pressure element 10 whose upper concave surface engages the lower end of member 5 and centres it. The upper end of member 5 is provided with diametrically opposed apertures 13 and the lower end of member 4 has a series of pairs of apertures 14 so that the two tubes may be fixed together in different positions by a pin 15. The upper end of member 4 has a rubber ferrule 16. In a modification, Fig. 4, the top member 7 is exteriorly screw threaded and is screwed into the top of the centre member 18 whose lower end engages a cross bar 20 sliding in slots in the lowest member 19. A spring engaging the foot 7 of member 19 engages rod 20. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the appliance comprises two tubular members only. Supports for goods, e.g. wearing apparel, are attached to the pillar.
