PICT:0745516/III/1 A surface coating on a continuously, horizontally moving strip, e.g. lacquer on an alumimium or other metal strip, is polymerized by subjecting strip and coating to a continuously circulated heated gas which is repeatedly subdivided into partial currents which after one such subdivision act in pairs on the strip in opposite directions from the ends of the treatment zone. An elongated casing encloses a heating chamber 1 and longitudinal passages 5 separated by a partition 4 from the chamber. and a fan 14 is connected at the suction side to the heating chamber 1 and at the pressure side to one end of each passage 5, the other ends opening into the heating chamber. The strip 2 travels along the chamber 1. Each passage 5 divides at the end into two parts leading to oblique inlets 11 one on each side of he chamber 1. Outlet slots 12 for the circulated gas are provided on both sides of the chamber. The gas is heated by an electric or other heater 16. Volatile substances given off by the coating are withdrawn through a damper-controlled pipe 17. A damper 7 controls the proportions of gas flowing through the two passages 5. The bottom of the chamber is concave in cross-section, so that if the strip sags unduly only its edges will touch the walls. A plurality of strips may run through the chamber side by side.
