807,515. Opening and blending fibres. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. Aug. 9, 1956 [Aug. 23, 1955], No. 24237/55. Classes 120(1) and 120(3) A machine for opening and cleaning fibrous materials comprises two parallel feed trunks A, B; a toothed rotary beater cylinder 14, co-operating with dirt-extracting means 15, 16, associated with each feed trunk; means for forming material fed. through each trunk into a partially compacted sheet, means for presenting the sheet edgewise to the toothed surface of the associated cylinder 14 and means for feeding it forward so that it is progressively disintegrated and carried past the dirt-extracting means, mechanical and/or pneumatic means for stripping the cleaned fibres from the cylinders; a reception chamber 17 located between cylinders 14 into which the stripped material is deposited; and a delivery outlet 19 into which opened fibres are conveyed from chamber 17. As shown, the sheet forming and feeding means consists of a fluted roller 13, which may be spring loaded, co-operating with the curved part 111 of a feed plate 11. A deflector 20 separates two air inlet ducts 21, 22 providing induced air streams Z which strip fibres from the cylinders 14 into chamber 17. In other embodiments, the fibre sheet is fed to the beater cylinder by a roller co-operating with a set of spring-loaded pedals or by a pair of contrarotating rollers. Material may be delivered to the trunks by cage or other condensing apparatus, feed to the, trunks being controlled to photo-electric or other means sensitive to the head of material in the trunks. The delivery ducts 19 from a number of units may deliver material to a common point. Separate ingredients may be fed to separate trunks, a desired blend being obtained by controlling the rates of supply from the trunks, e.g. by varying the speed of rollers 13.
