摘要
Driers for use in surface coating compositions comprise the drying metal soaps of a mixture of petroleum naphthenic acids and one or more acids produced by the Koch process, i.e. by reacting olefines containing at least 4 carbon atoms with carbon monoxide or formic acid in the substantial absence of added water and in the presence of a concentrated acid as catalyst and thereafter reacting the resulting reaction mixture with water (see Specifications 743,597 and 798,065), [both in Group IV (b)]. The process may be operated at low temperatures (e.g. 30-40 DEG C.) and relatively low pressures (e.g. 30 atmos). Drying metals specified are cobalt, lead, iron, nickel, manganese, zinc, calcium and barium. The naphthenic acids preferably have an acid value below 200, and the preferred Koch acids are the C8-12 acids. The soaps may be prepared from the free acids by direct reaction with a suitable drying metal compound (e.g. an hydroxide, oxide or carbonate) or by a double decomposition process using e.g. an alkali metal salt of the Koch acid(s)/naphthenic acids mixture and a water-soluble salt of the drying metal(s) at elevated temperatures. The soaps may be extracted into a non-aqueous phase (e.g. white spirit).ALSO:The invention comprises the drying metal soaps of a mixture of petroleum naphthenic acids and one or more acids produced by the Koch process, i.e. by reacting olefines containing at least 4 carbon atoms with carbon monoxide or formic acid in the substantial absence of added water and in the presence of a concentrated acid as catalyst and thereafter reacting the resulting reaction mixture with water (see Specifications 743,597 and 798,065).
