A starting gear for a reversible internal-combustion engine comprises a starter motor, a gear-wheel connected to the crank-shaft of the engine and two pinions which are axially movable independently of one another into and out of mesh with the gear-wheel and are in permanent mesh with one another, one pinion being operatively connected to the rotor of the starter motor. When the engine is to be started in a forward direction of rotation compressed air is admitted to the pneumatic starter motor A and simultaneously into the channel 14 so that the starter motor begins to rotate and at the same time the pinion 10 is brought into engagement with the gear 19 of the flywheel through the action of the compressed air in the pneumatic cylinder 13. If the engine is to be started in reverse compressed air is admitted through the channel 24 to the pneumatic cylinder 23 so that the pinion 20 is brought into engagement with the gear 19.
