A rotatable knob 7 of asymmetric form is mounted on the dash of a vehicle, adjacent the steering-wheel, to actuate the change-speed gear. The knob, which may have a control lock 15, is mounted on a flanged member 19 having a spring-loaded detent 32 and actuates the change-speed gear control through bevel gears 40, 41 and a lever 44. The projection 10 allows determination of position by feel, and may contain visual indicator means such as a lamp. The bevel gearing may be replaced by screw-and-nut mechanism working through suitable linkwork.
