In a method of making a gaseous fuel burner metal strip is formed into tube, inward pressure is applied to the tube to create outward pressure in an area of the burner where burner orifices are to be punched and the orifices punched while the pressure is applied. A stainless steel or brass burner tube of oval cross-section is perforated by punches 19 while located in a channel 12 between fixed and movable supporting members 3 and 4. Immediately prior to punching a cam-surface 16 on a strip 15 attached to the press-head 14, forces the spring-loaded member 4 towards the fixed member 3 which supports the upper portion of the tube by inducing a vertically directed outward force which resists the punching load. A resiliently-mounted punch guide 23 descends with the press-head and remains in contact with the members 3 and 4 until the punches are withdrawn. The punches 19 (Fig. 3, not shown) are mounted in a punch head 18 and secured by a member 19a and a collar 21, each punch being attached to a collar 21 by a circlip. Several burners may be perforated together, using a number of gripping members.
