An apparatus for applying a liquid or paste to one side of a web, e.g. of wallpaper, comprises a casing 1, means for rotatably mounting a roll of the wallpaper, a reservoir 3 for the liquid, a pick-up roller 6 for applying liquid to the web, roller means 5 for pressing the web on to the roller 6, means, e.g. a roller 14, for enabling the direction of withdrawal of the coated web to be reversed, and means, e.g. a blade 12, adjustable to ensure that a uniform film of liquid is applied by the roller 6 to the web. The roller 5 is carried by a pair of arms 4 urged by springs 7 to move in a clockwise direction and the roll of wallpaper is housed in a separate container 2 having a slit 10 for passage of the paper. The blade 12 is pivotally adjustable. In one modification, the container 2 is omitted, and the roller 5 bears by gravity on the roller 6, stub shafts on the roller 5 engaging slots in the casing 1. In this modification, the casing 1 may be stamped to form the container 2 and reservoir 3, and axially adjustable discs may be provided on a spindle for supporting the roll of wallpaper. In another modification similar to that described with reference to Fig. 1, the beams 4 are not spring-urged, but the roller 5 is weighted.
