Veneer is made resistant to humidity change by saturating it with moisture and pressing and drying it between two plates, at least one of the plates having a roughened surface so that the fibres on that side of the veneer are fixed in position against the influence of shrinking forces during drying. The veneer is "loosely" peeled, i.e. the compression during peeling owing to the pressing beam is only from 2-7% so that voids or cheeks are formed on the " loose " side, and the " tight " side is sanded to leave a thin flexible void-free layer on that side. If desired, the veneer is cut into the dimension of floor tiles and the tiles are immersed in water at 60- 90‹ C. for a period of 2-24 hours. The roughened surface on one of the pressing plates may be obtained by interposing a sheet of metal gauze between the plate and the " loose " side of the veneer so that the veneer fibres are fixed at the contact lines between the gauze and the tiles but are free to settle at the interstices. The pressure on the plates is about 56 lb/square inch and the drying temperature is of the order of 120‹ C.
