A process for the polymerization and copolymerization acetylenically unsaturated compounds -saturated aet

A compound having a carbon-to-carbon triple bond is polymerized in a liquid reaction medium using as catalyst a carbonyl of a Group IVb metal. Specified compounds include acetylene, propyne, phenyl acetylene, propargyl alcohol, propiolic acid, propargyl acetate, and 1:6-heptadiyne. They may be copolymerized with one another or with a compound having ethylenic unsaturation. The carbonyl may have the formula LnM(CO)m where M is a Group IVb metal, L at least one substituent attached directly to M, n an integer corresponding to the total co-ordinating capacity of L, m an integer and m+n is six; molybdenum hexacarbonyl is specified. Solvents including petroleum ether, cyclohexane, pentane, benzene, diethyl ether, acetone, ethanol, acetonitrile, and dimethylformamide, are given and may be mixed with water.
