892,073. Refining aluminium. HELLING, W. June 9, 1959 [June 19, 1958], No. 19674/59. Class 82(1). Apparatus for the removal from aluminium and its alloys of impurities such as zinc and magnesium by vacuum distillation consists of a furnace which is fitted with one or more internal baffles and which may be oscillated about its longitudinal axis, the furnace having an orifice above the level of molten metal, to which is releasably secured a condenser. In the embodiment illustrated, a furnace 10 (Fig. 2) has driving bands 12 in contact with driving rollers 13 whereby the furnace may be caused to oscillate. A series of baffles 17 is arranged longitudinally in the furnace, which has an orifice 19 adapted to receive condenser 11. A burner may be inserted in orifice 18 to heat the impure metal, after which the burner is removed, and the opening sealed with plug 21. When purification is complete the metal may be poured through opening 20. The condenser has an opening 39 for connection to any suitable vacuum pump, and a baffle 35 to prevent "straight-through" passage of vapours.
