898,082. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. MESSERSCHMITT A.G. Nov. 18, 1958, No. 36986/58. Class 42 (1). A process for producing seam-like connections in flat fabric structures, using thermoplastic masses applied to the structures and which are liquefied, is characterized by the use of thermoplastic plugs for forming a point-to-point seamlike connection between two or more webs. In one embodiment, Fig. 1a, balls 3 of thermoplastic resin bonding agent, fed from a magazine 4, are pressed by a pin 2 into holes 8, previously formed, in two layers 5, 6 of fabric. The fabric layers are fed stepwise by a plate 7 similar to the needle plate of a sewing-machine to provide a seam-like row of bonding points. Pin 2 and a plate 9 supply heat by conduction, ultrasonic energy or high-frequency electric energy to melt the bonding agent. In one modification, balls of bonding agent are pressed into the fabric from opposite sides simultaneously, no perforations being previously formed. In a second modification, the bonding agent is in the form of tapered studs which are driven into the layers of fabric ; the studs may be preformed or may be nipped off a wire at the time of insertion.
