1,2,4,5-tetramethylcyclohexane is obtained by hydrogenating a hydrocarbon fraction containing 1,2,4,5-tetramethylbenzene and fractionating to recover the naphthene free of other hydrocarbons. Durene may be recovered and thus separated in pure form from the original mixture by aromatisation of the naphthene. Hydrogenation may be effected, over a nickel catalyst and aromatisation over platinum.
