PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound having high industrial value and useful as a raw material of pyromellitic acid, by methylating 1,2,4- trimethylbenzene in the presence of a catalyst composed mainly of a crystalline gallosilicate. CONSTITUTION:1,2,4,5-Tetramethylbenzen is produced by methylating 1,2,4- trimethylbenzene with a methylation agent such as methanol, methyl chloride, etc. in the presence of crystalline gallosilicate prepared by the hydrothermal reaction of various silica sources, gallium sources and crystallizing agents in an aqueous medium or in the presence of a catalyst prepared by calcining the crystalline gallosilicate at 600-1,000 deg.C.
