Products suitable for use in paints, varnishes, insulating materials, adhesives, printing inks, moulding compositions and laminated materials are obtained by interpolymerizing styrene and one or more partially polymerized polyhydric alcoholic mixed esters containing conjugated triene drying oil fatty acid radicles. The process may be carried out in aqueous emulsion or in solution; terpenes, e.g. mono- or di-cyclic a -terpenes, are preferred solvents and may be used alone, with further solvents, or they may be added during the course of the reaction. In a modification, a part, e.g. 25 per cent, of the styrene is present initially and the remainder is added continuously or intermittently. The mixed esters are partially polymerized esters or mixtures of esters of one or more polyhydric alcohols containing a mixture of fatty acid radicles of which a proportion are conjugated triene drying oil acid radicles and a proportion are unsaturated fatty acid radicles of other types, including the products of heat treating two or more fatty acid esters of polyhydric alcohols, one of which contains fully conjugated triene drying oil fatty acid radicles, e.g. tung and oiticica oils, alkyd resins formed from the condensation of one or more polyhydric alcohols with polybasic organic acids and a mixture of the different types of unsaturated fatty acids are also included. The preferred esters are formed from glycerol, penta-erythritol, mannitol and sorbitol and the fatty acids of drying, semi-drying and non-drying oils, or the acids of rosin or copal. In examples: (1) a preheated mixture of blown linseed oil and raw tung oil was refluxed with styrene and xylene; (2) a preheated mixture of raw oiticica and linseed oils was refluxed with styrene, xylene and dipentene; (3) partially polymerized conjugated linseed oil, styrene and white spirit were refluxed together; (4) a tung-linseed stand oil was dispersed in an aqueous medium containing ammonia, turkey red oil, phenol, oleic acid and hydrogen peroxide, styrene was added and polymerization completed at 80 DEG C.; (5) a xylene solution of an alkyd resin, prepared by heating together linseed and tung oil fatty acids, glycerine, pentaerythritol and phthalic anhydride, was refluxed with styrene and (6) a preheated mixture of heat-treated wood oil and dehydrated castor oil was refluxed with styrene and turpentine. The products were varnishes from which paints were obtained by addition of metallic driers and pigments. Specifications 573,809, 573,835 and 580,912 are referred to.
