A micrometer gauge has adjusting means comprising concentrically, an inner barrel 1 with an axial datum line 9, a graduated rotary thimble 3 with an annular datum line 8 and an outer gapped barrel 10 with graduations 14. The graduated parts are protected by a cowl-like member 15 with a transparent window 18. The gauge may be an internal gauge having a head unit 19, 21 with anvils 26 which may be moved outwardly against the force of springs 23 by a taper nosed element 28 acting on knife edges 27.
