A submarine periscope is rotatable in azimuth about its vertical axis by an electric motor driven turntable controlled, through foot pedals, by the observer. The periscope may also be turned manually. The turntable member which engages the periscope during rotation, is automatically retracted to permit the periscope to be moved longitudinally along its vertical axis beyond specified limits so as to permit either lowering into the stowing well or raising beyond normal limits. The direction control foot pedal is operable only when the speed is below a predetermined valve.
