1,029,364. Hydrodynamic couplings. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 21, 1964 [Oct. 14, 1963], No. 38466/64. Heading F2C. A shear type fluid coupling comprises an input member 11 having annular projections 63, 64 interfitting between annular projections 65, 66 on an output casing 12. The casing comprises a main member 42 rotatably mounted by means of a ball bearing 23 on an input shaft 16 and having blades 14, 15 of a vehicle engine cooling fan bolted thereto, the member 42 being secured by screws to a cast metal cover 53 to which is secured a partition 60 separating a reservoir 62 from a working chamber 61. Liquid can pass from the reservoir to the working chamber through an opening 73 controlled by a valve arm 85 which is adjusted by a bimetallic temperature responsive coil 80 supported on the cover 53 and serving to close the opening 73 at relatively low temperatures and open the opening at higher temperatures. Liquid is returned from the working chamber to the reservoir through passages 71b, 71a in the cover 53, a pumping means formed by projections 90 on the cover serving to direct liquid into the passages 71a. Apertures 74 in the input member 11 direct fluid to opposite sides of the input member. A plurality of radially extending V-shaped grooves 79 are provided across the projections 63, 64 and extend below the projections to facilitate flow of fluid radially into the area of the projections. Cooling fins 67, 68 are provided on the casing member 42 and cover 53.
