A filter tip cigarette has a filter element comprising a matt or web of fibres composed of a polymer of acrylonitrile wherein the average diameter of acrylonitrile polymer fibres ranges from 0.5-10 microns, and is preferably about 3 microns. The polymer of acrylonitrile comprises at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile and may be an interpolymer of acrylonitrile and up to 15% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerisable therewith, e.g. vinyl acetate.
