Improvements in the concentrates of polymers which can be used particularly as additives for lubricants

A lubricant comprises (1) a petroleum oil, (2) one or more polymers obtainable by polymerization of alkyl esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids, at least one of said esters having one or more hydroxyl groups and (3) one or more polar compounds which are (a) miscible with (1) and (2), (b) have a molecular weight lower than said polymers and (c) have carbon and hydrogen and nitrogen and/or oxygen, provided that if oxygen and no nitrogen is present the oxygen is at least partly present as a non-cyclic ether, provided that if oxygen and nitrogen are present the compounds do not contain amide or phosphate groups and provided that if nitrogen and no oxygen is present the polar compounds are not arylamines. The polymer may be an acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer that is further reacted with ethylene oxide. Extensive lists of polar compounds are given which include imides, amine oxides, amines, imines, hydroxy amines, nitriles, piperidones, pyrrolidines, pyrazolones, pyridone, quinilones, caprolactams, oxindoles, polyglycols, polglycol ethers and esters (specific examples of each being given). The composition may also contain tritolyl phosphate and 4,4SP1/SP-methylene-bis (2,6-ditert-butylphenol).
