Viscosity-controlling additive for lubricating oils is prepd. by subjecting a soln. contg. 2 - 25, esp. 5 - 15, wt. % of a rubber-like copolymer of =2 different alpha - mono-olefins, with or without a copolymerisable non - conjugated diene to intense shearing by passing the soln. through a constriction, the pressure drop across the constriction being =280 esp. 350 - 1050 kg/cm2. The additive is stable to shear conditions during service.
