Apparatus for automatically opening and closing a door or gate following pedestrian actuation of a switch MC comprises a reversible motor M, an electromagnetic clutch CM, and reduction gearing P including an electromagnetic brake LCM. Actuation of the switch MC causes the motor to open the door, the duration of the action being governed by a variable resistance R 1 , Fig. 2 (not shown), controlling the time of discharge of a condenser C 1 . When the door is nearly open a cam OBC, on a shaft 5 operates a microswitch OBC to weakly apply the brake LCM. A switch OPC is similarly operated when the door has fully opened to apply the brake LCM strongly and to disengage the clutch CM. The motor M reverses after discharge of the condenser C 1 and microswitches CPC and OPC first weakly and then strongly apply the brake as the door closes. The switch MC may be placed beneath a doormat or may be actuated by a photo-cell. The motor may operate a hinged door through a pivoted arm 18 a roller 17, Fig. 3 (not shown), or a sliding door through a sprocket 20 engaging a door rail, Fig. 4 (not shown).
