To check and correct horizontal misalignment of railway track a wheeled carriage is provided having a transmitter 13 of, for example, infrared radiation directing a narrow beam longitudinally of the track and a receiver spaced there from and aligned to receive the radiation beam. An opaque screen 41 is located between the transmitter and receiver and is positioned laterally in accordance with a rail following member. The carriage is provided with jack means 45 J operative to shift the track horizontally in one direction in response to obstruction of the beam by the screen and in the opposite direction in response to transmission of the beam in such a way as to maintain the jack means in a hunting condition when the apparatus is in operation. This effectively straightens the track. Rollers 60-63 maintain the carriage in a predetermined lateral position and resist the jack forces. The carriage may progress continuously during operation and biassing can be provided to follow a predetermined curve. A modification in which the transmitter, Screen and receiver are on three separate trucks each spring-urged to closely follow the same rail is described with reference to Fig. 1. The jack in this case operates against a ballast anchor and the equipment must be stopped for jacking to take place. The apparatus of the present invention may be combined with the vertical profile and cross level investigating and correcting apparatus described in Specification 1,014,324.
