A tip bunch is twisted to loosen it before being pulled off the cop. Before cop changing is initiated a cop C' is moved into the transfer position and the nipper 23 moves to the left as shown in Fig. 3 thus causes the nipper to strike the stop 39 which is rotatable only in an anticlockwise direction and a previous tip bunch, held by the nipper 23 is sucked away through the suction tube 38. The nipper moves on to the dotted line position and as is passes the stop 39' the jaws are again opened against the action of the spring holding them closed and the nipper grips the tip bunch. The nipper is then rotated in the appropriate direction to loosen the tip bunch and is taken back to the full line position of Fig. 3 the stops 39 and 39' being ineffective in this withdrawal. A loop of yarn is then pulled off into the suction tube 38 to provide a means of reducing excess tension in the cop changing operation. A brake is provided on the cop to prevent the loop of yarn from becoming too large. After cop changing the yarn is cut on the first pitch by a temple cutter and the end is sucked into the suction tube 38 where it is taken away when the nipper jaws are next opened.
