Apparatus for measuring the position of e. g. a machine tool relative to the machine base comprises a ferromagnetic armature 20 (Fig. 2) attached to the moving member 19, and a coil assembly 6 embedded in the base 11, the assembly comprising an E-shaped permalloy core 9, with a winding 7, 8 on each leg. The coils 7, 8 are connected in an A. C. bridge circuit which is normally balanced, but is unbalanced when armature 20 is located near the longer leg 9b of the core 9. In another embodiment (Fig. 5), the core comprises a ferrite rod 21 with a central disc 22 and cylindrical sleeve 23. The armature approaches one end of the core, thereby affecting coil 7 only. A number of detecting devices may be used, the outputs being fed through logic circuits to control different parts of the machine tool.
