Cellulose regenerated sponge cloth is made by extruding, on to a moving conveyer belt 5, viscose paste containing reinforcing fibres in string or ribbon-like form to produce a deposit of a series of juxtaposed parallel strings or ribbons, in which the fibres are oriented along the lengths thereof, extending at right-angles to the direction of travel of the belt and, prior to conduction through a regeneration and finishing bath, spreading the paste into a film of predetermined thickness, in which the fibres are disorientated and the strings blended, by means of a ribbed roller 8 extending at right-angles to the direction of movement of the belt and which rotates at a surface velocity equal to that of the belt 5. The extrusion head 1 is provided with a plurality of nozzles 2 and reciprocates on rods, and between stops 4 at either end thereof, across the diameter of a turntable 3 which alternately rotates through a predetermined angle in different directions at either end of a traverse of the head 1 whereby, in conjunction with the velocity of the belt 5 and of traverse of the head 1, each deposition of strings is parallel to that preceding and at right angles to the direction of travel of the belt. The strings are parted from the extrusion nozzles 2 at the end of each traverse by a plate 6. The movements of the turntable 3, extrusion head 1 and plate 6 are controlled by fluid pressure operable rams 10, 11 and 7, respectively. The viscose paste is fed to the head 1 by a pump. A photo-electric cell 9, or a contact roller, monitors the build-up of paste in front of the roller 8 whereby the rate of deposition of the strings, e.g. the pump delivery or the timing of the extrusion cycle, is varied to maintain an even build up. The head 1 may comprise variable die orifices whereby the build-up at roller 8 is controlled. The belt 5 may be provided with surface designs to be reproduced on the film.
