Compounds of the formula FORM:1101156/C2/1 in which Ar represents the residue of an aromatic carbocyclic ring system (e.g. benzene, naphthalene) which may be substituted, e.g. by halogen or alkyl, alkoxy or cyano groups, X is oxygen or sulphur or a group of formula -NR- where R is hydrogen or alkyl which may be substituted, e.g. by halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, cyano, carboxy or alkoxycarbonyl groups, R1 and R2, which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen, alkyl (whch may be substituted), carboxy, alkoxycarbonyl or hydroxy groups, Y represents halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or cyano and n1 is 0 or an integer from 1 to 4, may be obtained by reacting a compound of the formula FORM:1101156/C2/2 (a) with an acetylenic compound of the formula R1.CC.R2 or (b) with an ester of aceto-acetic acid, preferably ethyl acetoacetate. The above products in which R1 and/or R2 represent carboxylic ester groups may be hydrolysed to the corresponding acids which may subsequently be decarboxylated. The azide starting materials may be obtained by reacting a compound of the formula FORM:1101156/C2/3 with sodium nitrite/HCl and treating the product with sodium azide.ALSO:A composition comprising a solid or liquid carrier and at least one compound of the formula: FORM:1101156/D1-D2/1 wherein Ar represents the residue of an aromatic carbocyclic ring system (e.g. benzene, naphthalene) which may be substituted, e.g. by halogen or alkoxy, alkyl or cyano groups, X is oxygen or sulphur or a group of formula -NR- where R is hydrogen or alkyl which may be substituted, e.g. by halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, cyano, carboxy or alkoxycarbonyl groups, R1 and R2, which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen, alkyl (which may be substituted), carboxy, alkoxycarbonyl or hydroxy groups, Y represents halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or cyano and nsv is O or an integer from 1 to 4, may be employed to treat textile materials. The compositions may be used to treat cellulosic, polyamide, polypeptide and polyacrylic fibres and they may be in the form of aqueous solutions or suspensions, which may also include hypochlorite and/or surface active agents, or as solutions in solvents other than water. Where the compositions include a solid carrier, this may comprise a solid synthetic detergent or soap.
