Purified petrol and other valuable products are recovered from a crude petrol feedstock containing polymerizable olefinic material including cyclic and acyclic conjugated diolefines in a process which comprises in succession selectively polymerizing the conjugated cyclic diolefines in the mixture, separating low-boiling material without substantially decomposing the polymerized residue, polymerizing the conjugated acyclic diolefines in the separated low-boiling material, and separating petrol therefrom. The two polymerization steps may be effected by heating to 100-150 DEG C. and 200-300 DEG C. respectively, preferably under at least sufficient pressure to keep the feed liquid, and the separation steps are preferably effected by distillation at 120-160 DEG C. and above 200 DEG C., respectively, especially by flash distillation. Amongst the by-products there is obtained a mixture of polymerized cyclic conjugated diolefines and mono-olefine monomers containing 8 or more carbon atoms which is substantially free of acyclic conjugated diolefines having less than 8 carbon atoms, which mixture may be employed as a resin former, and, from the second separation, a residue which may be used as a linseed oil substitute.
