A walking toy e.g. a walking doll comprises a hollow body 10 on which are mounted legs 12 and 13. Each leg 12, 13 is attached to a disc 18, 19 by biassing means 20 and 21 which enable the legs to be moved to a sitting position when the doll is not in action, but lock the legs to the disc for walking. The propulsion mechanism as illustrated in Fig. 3 is pivoted about rod 37 which is attached to the front and rear of the body by bushes 38 and 39. The legs pivot on rod 63 and are moved about rod 63 by rod 64. Electric motor 58 drives rod 51 which in turn is connected to crank 54 through eccentric pin 52, crank 54 being attached to a rigid bar 55. "L" shaped pieces 65, 66 which are mounted on rod 63 pivot at 76 and 77 and have slots 78 and 79 through which rod 64 passes. In operation the mechanism is tilted about rod 37 (as shown in Fig. 7) by the eccentric pin 52. The weight of the body is shifted onto right leg 12 and on upward reaction is exerted on the right hand side of rod 64 which pivots in hole 73 and forces down the left hand end of rod 66 causing the leg to pivot forward about rod 63 which is arranged forward of C of G of the leg. This rotation is aided by the movement of C of G about rod 63 and by the force exerted by the "L" shaped piece 66 which forced the left hand end of of rod 64 downwards as the other end of 66 engages a springy piece of metal 82. In an alternative embodiment the doll is actuated by a rocking device held by the operator which is connected to the rocking bar in the doll by a Bowden cable.
