[Also in Division G3] In an echo sounder, a driving motor 1 for the distance measuring unit has its speed varied according to alterations of the velocity of sound in the water. A coil 22 produces a signal whose frequency represents the motor speed, this signal being converted into a square pulse train in trigger unit 24 whose output is applied to frequency divider 25. The frequency signal f i is compared with a reference frequency signal f s from oscillator 20 in a comparator 27. At the same time, the signal f i is converted into a D.C. signal U i by unit 28. For producing a D.C. reference signal U s , oscillator 20 comprises a sound transmitting path 29 having a fixed length and lying in the same medium in which the echo sounding for distance measurement is performed. A sound generator 30 is connected through pulse stage 32 to multivibrator 33 which is synchronized by pulses from sound receiver 31. A separating stage 36 is connected to a frequency divider 37 for providing the signal f s , the signal U s being derived through the converter 38. The differential voltage delta U from comparator 19 is used for controlling the motor. A flip-flop 39 receives signals from the frequency dividers 25, 37, and is connected to pulse length-direct current converters 40, 41, associated with comparator 42 whose output is added to that from the comparator 19. The signals f i and f s may be compared in a forward and backward counter for controlling the motor 1.
