Plated polycarbonate plastics are prepared by (1) subjecting to an alkaline oxidizing solution pH above 12 to produce a surface gel structure (2) etching the gelled surface (3) sensitizing the surface (4) activating the surface, and (5) electroless plating. Prior to step (1) the polycarbonate may be contacted with (a) solvents of formulae where X 1 , X 2 and X 3 are each chlorine or hydrogen or (b) compounds of formula H-(CH 2 ) n -OH where n is an integer from 1-4 or mixtures thereof. The alkaline solution may be an alkali metal hydroxide, e. g. sodium hydroxide, and the oxidizing agent is e. g. a nitrate, nitrite, chlorite or mixture thereof. The electroless plating may be Au, Cu, Ni or Ag which may be subsequently plated with Ni-Cr or Ni-Au.
