1,145,033. Grafted polyhydrocarbons. CHEVRON RESEARCH CO. 23 Oct., 1967 [20 Feb., 1967], No. 48156/67. Addition to 1,080,254. Heading C3G. A free-radical addition polymerizable monomer is grafted on to an aliphatic hydrocarbon polymer containing no peroxidic groups by forming a mixture comprising a polar liquid medium, a polar liquid insoluble or substantially insoluble free - radical addition polymerizable monomer, a solid aliphatic hydrocarbon polymer containing no peroxidic groups and an oilsoluble free-radical catalyst and heating the mixture to polymerize the monomer on to said hydrocarbon polymer, thereby forming a hydrocarbon polymer modified by said addition polymerizable monomer. The method is particularly applied to the grafting of a tart.- amine-containing monomer in an aqueous medium on to a poly-1-alkene, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene or poly-4-methyl-1- pentene. Specified monomers are vinyl pyridines, 4-isopropenyl pyridine, diethylaminoethyl acrylate, N,N-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate and N,N-dimethylallyl amine. In the example, powdered polypropylene is grafted with 2-vinyl pyridine.
