An adhesive applying device comprises a melting chamber 420 having an inlet through which a solid rod R of adhesive can be introduced into the melting chamber and an outlet through which molten adhesive can flow from the melting chamber and means H for heating the chamber to melt adhesive therein, the chamber being so shaped that it progressively increases in one dimension from the inlet towards the outlet. Preferably the chamber also progressively decreases in its other dimension from the inlet towards the outlet and ends in another portion 424 through which the adhesive can pass to the outlet. The device may be comprised of two rectangular shaped blocks 412, 414 the face of one being recessed to form the melting chamber. The device has particular application in a shoe lasting machine. The adhesive rod is fed by a pair of feed wheels driven through a flexible drive the molten adhesive being fed into a box in which is housed a hydraulically operated piston. The latter is operated from the wiper head of the lasting machine so that a measure of adhesive is extruded from said box, through a heated pipe to a nozzle, shaped according to the pattern of adhesive to be applied, and moved into contact with the shoe part. Return of the piston in said box allows further adhesive to be led into the melting chamber.
