An ironing board has a conveyor 10 which moves transversely across it to carry clothes to be ironed, the ironing board having a rigid base plate and a resilient layer 43 above the base plate and below the top run of the conveyor. The roller 12 is moveable from the dotted to full line positions to tighten the belt. The movement of the conveyor can be electrically controlled by a foot treadle or, when a reversible conveyor is provided, by hand controls on the hand iron itself. The pad 43 may be formed of tubular-woven glasscloth, shiny faced foamed plastics or may be enclosed in a woven nylon or glasscloth envelope.
