A handrail belt drive for escalators or passenger conveyer belts 2 comprising a drive capstan 5 disposed in the base housing of the escalator or conveyer, the return or unused run of the handrail being resiliently urged against the capstan 5 by means of a pressure device 11 which is (in common with the drive capstan) so mounted in the base housing to permit its movement in such a manner as to vary the handrail belt tension. As shown, the capstan and device 11 are mounted on a frame 14 which is adjustable relative to a main frame 12 by slots 14 and bolts 15. The pressure device comprises an assembly 22 of roller units 23SP3/SP pressed against the handrail belt over the arc of its contact with the drive wheel, the roller units being mounted on a flexible strip which is fastened rigidly at one end and by means of a spring 28 which tensions the strip in the longitudinal direction at the other end to a common bracket 21 supporting the drive capstan. The strip tension of the assembly of roller units is adjustable by means of a screw threaded bolt connection 27 inserted between the spring and the strip, the spring being supported at its one end on the bracket 21, and at its other end on the head of the bolt 27 or on a square disc 27SP4/SP under the head of that bolt. In order to obtain repeatability of determined adjustment of the strip tension of the assembly of roller units, a pin 30 is inserted into the bracket 21 parallel to the axis of the spring 28, and extends to correspond in height to the spring when the adjustment is made, the pin being situated outside the incircle 27, and inside or on the circumcircle of the square disc.
