Water-soluble alkyd resins for varnishes

Water-soluble alkyd resins for varnishes are produced by (a) forming an addition product of an unsatd. oil or fatty acid, with an unsatd. dicarboxylic acid or anhydride; (b) transesterifying the addition product with an excess of a polyol, to give a product which is more than monoesterified, and (c) mixing the product with a small amt. of polycarboxylic acid. Previous water-soluble alkyd resins generally gave fibres with poor physical properties. The present alkyd resins give films with excellent properties, in addition to being water-soluble. The alkyd resins may also be mixed with water-soluble urea-and melamine resins.
