In order that dialysing fluid, e.g. a sterile sodium chloride-glucose-water solution may be recycled to a dialysis membrane for repeated reduction of the body urea concentration, urease and "zirconium phosphate" ion exchanger are contacted with the dialysing fluid so that the urea which diffuses from the blood into the dialysing fluid is broken down by the urease into ammonium carbonate whereupon the ammonium ions are removed by the ion exchanger. The term "zirconium phosphate" includes ZrNa(PO 4 ) 2 .H 2 O, ZrH (PO 4 ) 2 .H 2 O or ZrKHPO 4 .H 2 O, and may be present as an ion-exchange column with urease absorbed therein. Alternatively the urease can be dissolved in the dialysing fluid; or the urease can be absorbed on the zirconium phosphate and the latter added in particulate form to the dialysing fluid to produce a circulating slurry; or the urease and zirconium phosphate may be added separately to form a circulating slurry. If the exchange column is used it can be vented for carbon dioxide.
