1286966 Nitrogen containing esters of carboxycopolymers LUBRIZOL CORP 18 Dec 1969 [20 Dec 1968 20 Oct 1969] 61743/69 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] A nitrogen-containing mixed ester of a carboxy-containing interpolymer is claimed, the interpolymer having a reduced specific viscosity of from 0À05 to 2, and the ester being free of titratable acidity and having within its polymeric structure at least one of each of three pendant polar groups: (A) A relatively high molecular weight carboxylic ester radical having at least 8 aliphatic carbon atoms, (B) A relatively low molecular weight carboxylic ester radical having no more than 7 aliphatic carbon atoms, and (C) A carbonyl-polyamino group derived from a polyamino compound including a primary or secondary amino group, the molar ratio of (A) : (B) : (C) being (60-90) : (10-30) : (2- 15). The interpolymer may be a styrene-maleic anhydride interpolymer. The ester may be made by (1) partially esterifying a styrenemaleic anhydride interpolymer having a reduced specific viscosity of from 0À05 to 2 with a mixture of a relatively high molecular weight alcohol having at least 7 aliphatic carbon atoms, and a relatively low molecular weight alcohol having no more than 6 aliphatic carbon atoms, so as to convert from 50 to 98% of the carboxy radicals of the interpolymer to ester radicals, the molar ratio of the relatively high molecular weight alcohol to the relatively low molecular weight alcohol being from 2 : 1 to 9 : 1, and (2) neutralizing the remaining carboxy radicals of the interpolymer with a polyamino compound including a primary or secondary amino group e.g. aminopropyl morpholine, N-aminoethyl and 1-methyl-4-aminoethyl piperazine, dimethylamino-ethylamine, dibutylamino-propylamine, N-aminoethyl pyrrole, N-aminopropyl thiopyrrolidone, N-aminoethyl caprolactam, N- aminophenyl oxazolidone, 4-aminoethyl thiazole, 2-cyclohexyl triazine, 1-aminoethyl-2- hepta-decylimidazoline, N-aminooctyl succinamide 3-aminobvtyl nracil, 4-aminobutyl pyridine or N-aminomethyl phenolthiazine. The ester may be compounded with a lubricating oil.
