1,172,651. Textile treating apparatus. GASTON COUNTY DYEING MACHINE CO. 23 Jan., 1968 [2 Feb., 1967], No. 3513/68. Heading D1L. A web of textile material is treated with a liquid by being passed continuously through a chamber in which a sonically propagated gaseous dispersion of the liquid has been produced. The liquid may be dye, size or resin. The treatment chamber 10 is framed within a vessel 12 having vertical side walls 28 and lower conically tapered side-walls 28a terminating in a trough 30. A sonic generator 24 is mounted on a cross-plate 26 at the level of junction between walls 28a and walls 28. A discharge chamber 40 is formed immediately above the generator 24 by a baffle plate 38 and a horizontal series of bafflestrips 42 to open to the chamber 10. The upper end of chamber 10 is sealed by three rolls 14, 16, 18, rolls 14, 16 forming an entry nip for a web W and rolls 16, 18 an exit nip. The web W is fed through nip 14, 16 into chamber 10 and follows a sinusoidal path alternately over upper rolls 20 and lower rolls 22 axially leaving through nip 16, 18. A predetermined mixture of air and liquid is fed to the generator 24 which propagates a gaseous dispersion containing particles in the size range 5-10 microns, the dispersion passing around baffle 38 into chamber 10. The spent gas is exhausted via chamber 40. Any gas contacting the side walls 28a condenses and runs into trough 30. To prevent condensation on side walls 28 they are covered with a fine wire meshing 50 and air from blowers 48 is blown into the chamber to form a film over those walls. The liquid has a solids concentration of up to 33% by wt.
