In the variable-speed friction gear described in the parent Specification the barrel-shaped idler roller is modified to ensure contact with the driving and driven discs. As shown in Fig. 3, the roller 14a is divided into two portions by a slightly inclined transverse plane, roller bearings 23 carried by a cage being mounted between the two portions which are urged apart by loading springs 24 in one portion and which bear against an axial pin 26 mounted in the other portion. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the dividing plane is perpendicular to the roller axis and the rollers 27 are mounted between opposed cam recesses (29) in the end faces of the roller portions.
