In an injection moulding machine having a hydraulically operated closing and opening device for the mould halves 6, 6SP1/SP which are mounted upon mould clamping plates 2SP1/SP, 9, the closing and opening device includes locking means comprising a central wedge 12 and a hydraulically operable locking wedge 14, the central wedge 12 being movable in the direction of movement of a mould clamping plate and co-operating with wedge components 11 supported on longitudinal spars 1 of the frame, and the locking wedge 14 being movable in a direction perpendicular to the direction of movement of the clamping plate and co-operating on one side with an abutment surface on the mould clamping plate 9 and on the other side with an end surface 16 of the central wedge 12, the action of the two wedges being transmitted through rollers 13, 17, 19 interposed between the respective wedge surface and the surface that co-operates therewith. As shown the mould halves 6, 6SP1/SP are closed by hydraulic pistons 5 in cylinders formed in the longitudinal spars 1. The plate 2SP1/SP is fixed while the plate 9 is slidably mounted on the spars 1. When the mould is closed a further piston 23 (Fig. 2) in a cylinder 24 is used to lock it in closed position. Piston 23 moves the locking wedge 14 upwardly in Fig. 2 thereby moving the central wedge 12 to the left in Fig. 1 so as to bring about clamping engagement between the wedge components 11 and the spars 1.
