In an electroslag refining process, in which an electrode is fed into a cooled open-bottomed mould (closed at its lower end by a bottom plate) and is fused into a molten slag layer in the mould to form an ingot, the mould is raised relative to the ingot (supported on the bottom plate) in a plurality of steps, the size of the steps being controlled so that the lower mould edge is kept below the lowermost point of the molten metal pool at the top of the ingot. On emerging from the lower mould edge, the ingot can be cooled by water sprays or compressed air, rapid cooling ensuring a fine grain cast structure and suppressing segregation. Alternatively, cooling can be retarded below the mould by heating the ingot or by moving the ingot through a heat-insulated zone.
