Compounds of the general formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are each H, halogen or C 1-4 alkyl, are prepared by reacting the corresponding compounds of the general formula with an alkyl nitrite, the reaction taking place at 0-50‹ C. in methanolic solution saturated with hydrogen chloride. The corresponding 2- methoxy-pyridines are formed as by-products.
