Oxidation of the active mass of negative accumulator plates is inhibited by steeping the formed, washed plates in, or spraying them with, a solution of natural or synthetic tannins, then drying the plates in the usual way. A suitable solution is an aqueous solution containing 0.5 to 5 wt. per cent of spruce bark extract solids. The effect may be enhanced by adding to the solution 1 to 2 wt. per cent of 1-hydroxy-2- naphthoic acid or 2-5 wt. per cent of boric acid.
