A rotary mandrel is used for winding and is associated with a reciprocable carriage mounting three annular plates provided with an annular array of glass fibre rovings supply bobbins which are selectively driven synchronously with the winding mandrel or selectively arrestable such that as the carriage is moved in opposite directions along the winding mandrel. Selected rings apply helical windings or longitudinally extended reinforcing elements to the mandrel.
