Drive mechanism for producing a vertical reciprocating as well as a rotary motion in a stirrer shaft with multiple stirrer element for a liquid/liquid extraction column, has the stirrer shaft rotated by a motor through an infinitely variable gear, articulated shaft and worm gear, the output shaft of the variable gear carrying a control pulley driving a second control pulley mounted on another shaft having an eccentric socket at its free end in which a ball joint journal engages for the production of a reciprocating motion of the stirrer shaft.
