Gases liberated during charging and recharging cycles of a sealed accumulator are chemically recombined exothermically and the water so produced used to keep the accumulator topped up. Departures from the correct stoichiometric ratio during some cycles balance out with similar departures in other cycles so that in the long term the stoichiometric ratio of 2.1 is approx. maintained. The overall temp. rise of the catalyst and the rates of gas flow are kept below the critical limits for explosive recombination by self braking of the catalytic action due to thermal inertia and by artificially slowed down access of the gases to the active catalyst.
