1,211,555. Coating apparatus. O. A. BECKER. 31 Oct., 1967 [11 Nov., 1966; 6 Feb., 1967; 11 Feb., 1967; 2 Sept., 1967; 6 Sept., 1967], No. 49302/67. Heading B2L. In a method of protecting from corrosion blank areas of sheet metal otherwise coated with protective layers, the blank areas are covered by synthetic material in the form of discs, rings, strips or strings which are attached thereon. A carriage 323 (Fig. 2) is suported by rollers 320 on the edge 301a of a panel 301, and a rail 319 respectively. Adhesive tape 315a is drawn from a roll 315, journalled on carriage 323, and, after passing over a guide roller 316, is folded over edge 301a by a folding guide 317 and is then pressed against panel 301 by opposed rollers 318. A knife 321 for severing the tape is mounted on the trailing end of carriage 323. In a modification (Fig. 3) the axes of the rollers 320 are displaced through 90 degrees and are supported on opposite sides of edge 301a. In (Fig. 5) adhesive tape is stretched parallel to and adjacent the edge 301a, and panel 301, .movably supported on balls, is then pushed towards the tape to carry the latter and edge 301a between the nip of opposed rollers which fold the tape over edge 301a and press it against panel 301. Fig. 6 shows apparatus adapted to apply adhesive tape to the edges 21b, 21c of a notch formed in a panel 21. A carriage 46 slidably carries a plate 51a outwardly biased by a spring 53 to position a nose 51 thereof beyond respective pairs of jaws 55a, 55b corresponding in inclination and length to the edges 21a, 21b. Adhesive tape 49 from a reel 48, journalled on carriage 46, is passed over nose 51 and is secured to a body 52 slidably mounted on a pin 52b rigid with carriage 46, and biased by a spring 52c to tension tape 49. In use, carriage 46 is moved towards panel 21 until nose 51 engages the inner corner 21a of the notch. Further movement of carriage 46 retracts nose 51, whereby blades 56, positioned one on each side of nose 51, sever the tape at corner 21a, and blades 58a, 58b sever the tape at the outer corners 21d, 21e of the notch. During further movement of carriage 46, the jaws 55a, 55b fold the tape over the edges 21a, 21b. In Fig. 18, apparatus for covering the curved edge 117rf of a car door 117 with adhesive tape 123a comprises a frame 120 supporting a carriage 122 by means of rollers 131. A double-armed lever 125, pivoted at 126 on carriage 122, journals on one arm 125a a reel 123 of adhesive tape 123a which passes over a roller 128 journalled on the other arm 125b. An air cylinder 134 when energised extends its piston rod 135, against the bias of a spring 136, to engage arm 125b to press roller 128 and tape 123a against edge 117f. Tape 123a is folded over and pressed against door 117 adjacent edge 117f by a roller 129 journalled on arm 125b. Carriage 122 is moved along frame 120 by opposed friction wheels 132a (132b) driven by a motor 132 controlled by limit switches positioned at the ends of frame 120. Tape 123a is severed by a knife 130 mounted on carriage 122. In (Fig. 21) apparatus for covering a straight edge (117g) of door 117 comprises a frame (154) movable towards and away from edge (117g). A reel (146), journalled on frame (154) at one end of edge (117g), carries a composite band comprising adhesive tape (145) connected by short links (145b) to a tape (145a) reinforced by longitudinal plastics threads (145c). Said band is stretched parallel to edge (117g) and wound on a reel (148) journalled at the other end of edge (117g). Frame (154) is then moved towards edge (117g) whereby tape (145) is folded over the latter by jaws 150a, 150b and tape 145a is severed from tape 145. Jaw (150d) is backed by a rubber strip (151) and jaw (150b) is backed by a hose (152) which is inflated to press the folded tape against the door adjacent (117g). The edge-coating tape may, instead of being adhesive, be coated with synthetic material, and the panel is then heated adjacent the edge being covered by infra red radiation or hot air to the melting temperature of hte synthetic material. In Fig. 28 a panel edge 444 is covered by a weldable cord 511 drawn from a reel 501 journalled on a car riage 500 having rollers 509 running on edge 444 and on a parallel rail 508. Cord 511 is initially passed over edge 444 by a peripherally grooved roller 512 and is then spread over the sides adjacent edge 444 by opposed tapered rollers 513a and opposed cylindrical rollers 514a. Hot air is applied by a duct 507a. In (Fig. 30) the corner between flanges (531a, 531b) extending downwardly from a panel 531 is covered by means of weldable cord (534) pressed internally against the corner by a heater block 545, and by a weldable cord 541 supported by a pivoted block 544 which is swung inwardly to press cord 541 externally against the corner. A nozzle (542) directs hot air downwardly on to the corner, and the flanges 531a, 531b are cooled by respective water ducts (533a, 533b). In Fig. 10 the edges of a hole 89a formed in a panel 89 are protected by applying self-adhesive washers 86 on opposite sides of panel 89 concentrically with hole 89a the outer diameter of washers 86 .being greater than that of hole 89a, and the diameter of the central hole 86b in washers 86 being less than that of hole 89a, whereby the opsoped washers adhere together around the concentric holes 86b within hole 89a. Washers 86 are initially mounted on belts 85 concentric with holes formed therein. The belts are drawn from respective opposed reels, and the washers are removed from the belts and applied to panel 89a by opposed punches 87a co-operating with respective dies 87b. In (Fig. 15) the edges of a hole (89a) in panel 89 are protected by a single washer (104). A cylinder (102a) contains a perforated rubber piston (103a) from which extends a hollow thin-walled cylindrical portion (103b) which terminates in a solid conical portion (103c). Washer (104) is initially threaded on portion 103c, and the latter is advanced through hole 89a by pressure applied to cylinder (102a) via a plate (101), until washer (104) is folded upwards within hole 89a by portion (103b), and also adheres to the lower surface of panel (89). Air pressure is then applied to cylinder (102a) via a pipe (106), and downward pressure is applied to portion (103c) via a plate 107, whereby portion (103b) collapses outwardly to fold the upwardly-projecting portion of washer (104) outwardly on to panel (89).

BECKER。
