In an underwater echo-sounding system optimum resolution at both very short and very long ranges is obtained by transmitting, in each sounding period, at least two sounding pulses of different carrier frequency substantially simultaneously and by making the receiver responsive to the highest frequency for earlyarriving echoes and to the lowest frequency for late-arriving echoes. In the Fig. 5 embodiment contact 49 on the stylus-carrying belt 15 of an electrochemical echo recorder 43 bridges contacts 47, 48 to trigger pulse generators 22, 23 for emission of two frequencies simultaneously. Echoes received by tuned receivers 27, 44 and 28, 45 are passed via switch-tuned amplifier stage 40, doubletuned stage 41 and a final amplifier 42 to recorder 43. At the beginning of the sounding period, and for a time determined by the length of contact 46, transistor T 1 conducts to short part of L 3 and so tune stage 40 to the higher frequency; for the remainder of the sounding period T 1 is blocked and stage 40 is tuned to the lower frequency. Since attenuation increases with range, the energy content of the higher frequency (short range) sounding pulses can be made smaller than that of the lower frequency (long range) pulses by decreasing the pulse length and amplitude with increase in frequency; this permits better resolution at short range. Simultaneous transmission is ensured by differently delaying the transmission of frequencies other than the lowest frequency, such that the first amplitude peak in each pulse coincides with the first peak of the lowest frequency. If it is required to record a "white line" in the sea-bed contour the highest frequency may be transmitted a little before the other frequencies. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) separate receiving channels are provided for two frequencies, the higher frequency channel being open for the whole sounding period and the lower frequency channel being open for the latter part only of the sounding period. Due to rapid attenuation of the higher transmitted frequency, echoes of this frequency are not of significant amplitude in the latter part of the sounding period, but if desired the higher frequency channel can be blocked in this latter period. The echo signals may be differentiated before being recorded. Modifications of the switched tuning of stage 40 in Fig. 5 are described, examples of carrier frequencies and pulse lengths are given, and the electrochemical recorder may be replaced by a cathode - ray tube indicator.
