A rotary drum dryer for pond sludges in which the sludge is dried on its passage through the drum 5 from inlets 4 to outlets 6, by flames or hot gas supplied by burner 8, comprises a fixed tube 15 in the horizontal midplane of the drum, which tube supports an adjustable and releasable substantially flat strip-form blade 11 for scraping material from the drum wall and flat guide vanes 12 for assisting in the movement of the sludge, which vanes are set at an angle to a transverse plane of the drum independently of the scraper blade 11 and below the scraper blade 11. The scraper blade may comprise more than one section, may have a curved tapered edge and may carry prongs. The guide vanes may be adjustable. The tube 15 may support a guide plate 13 extending along the drum, for assisting in keeping material off the drum wall and curved guide plates (not shown) at the inlet and outlet openings.
